Opel GT Vintage Racer

Post by prorallycodriver »

Came in as a complete rust bucket. Going SRVA vintage racing. Here it is now stripped naked ready for rebuild.

I've seen a few in full race livery, they look great. I'll make sure to take photos now that someone is working on one.

Guess I should have said this build is for a customer. I would have chosen something else but it is what he had in high school. He is a big fan of the late F1 driver Jim Clark and his Lotus so its going to be painted British racing green w/ the yellow nose band/center stripe. Lots going into this project so it should turn out interesting enough I figured would do a build thread.

Regardless, my initial enthusiasm still stands.
I think it will look great in BRG with yellow stripe.

BRG is one of my favorite colors. I wanted a green car last time out but sadly it's dropped off the color pallets of most every manufacturer, at least that I can afford.

Fabricated and welded in new floors, rockers and quick release steering column and adapter. Tall driver has meant some fitment hurdles but seem to be working out. Main hoop is done also.

Would have been nice starting w/ a rust-free car but there is a sense of satisfaction saving one from the crusher.

Race seat procured.

Change in plans. Due to so many other british racing green historic cars, car is now going to be Gulf blue and orange livery.

Is the drivetrain going to be upgraded?

Yep. I don't know all the details other than the parts sent to the machine shop are back and have seen at the shop intake manifold and dual 45 DCOE Webers, shiny exhaust header and know that there is a lightened flywheel and performance or racing cam there.

Gulf. Martini Racing. Players. Marlboro. (though the last two could be controversial) Lots of great, classic liveries to choose from.

Marlboro is classic but it doesn't hold a candle to Gulf. I saw a Smart Car in Gulf livery at Hockenheimring: it looked good!
