My new headache

Post by Black 95 TSI »

I picked up the car Saturday, and dropped it off at my brothers. I still don't know if I am going to just drop a used engine in it for now or build one.

What are your long term plans for the car?
If this is to be high-power, dedicated track-day car than a purpose built EJ257 is the way to go.
If this is going to be a daily-driven semi-project car with some occasional track days in it's future, than a EJ205 with some stronger internals is more than adequate. An EJ205 with the right turbo and injectors can easily run 300 whp for years w/o issue.
The only real advantage of the EJ257 (or EJ255) is AVCS and displacement. If you really love torque, than this is your option.
That said, I never felt I was underpowered in my 18G EJ205 wagon.

I really just want something nice to drive. I have found some used engines for 2k. So I may go that route for now. What's involved in the ej25 swap? I don't want to go to crazy like my Talon, that car is not a streetable car and just sits.

The EJ257 (or 255) bolts up just fine w/ no issues.
You would need an applicable ECU (STi / Legacy GT / Forester XT) and the wiring harness to go with it.
You can use a 257 or a 255 block with 205 heads and still use the stock WRX ECU. A tune would be required, but I suspect you will be adding that anyhow.
There are a number of threads available on NASIOC in the Engine Builds section that will give you significantly more detail.
If you do go 257 or 255 block, you will need to have some head work done (but not much).

I am thinking of doing the exhaust and injectors while the engine is out. Maybe a turbo also.

The injectors will certainly be much easier with the engine out. As will the up-pipe.

I am thinking of just getting a used engine for now to get the car running. And then building a 207.

Picked up a complete used engine. For now it's all stock.

Got the car started today. Car started and ran for about 2 mins then stalled. Would start and stall. Acted like it was out of gas. Fuel gauge showed full. But didn't know if it was right so we put gas in it. Tank was full. After checking everything found a paper towel stuffed in the intake tube in front if the mass airflow sensor. Got the car started Had a rough idle and sputtering under load. Unhooked the mass airflow. Ran great.

Zak this car has made me drink a lot. There where a few times that if it caught fire I would let it burn.

I have a spare MAF that you can use for testing and such. I do like to keep it around of things go in the southerly direction.
