Audi to do pikes peak - sans driver

Post by complacent »

Say wut?

Apparently they've got an autonomous TTS that they're going to run up pike's peak all by itself.

I'm very curious to see what happens. I'm reeeeeely excited to see what kind of times it can turn.

Wasn't sure if this belongs in Audi or Rally. Heh.

That's pretty freaking awesome.
The TTS is named Shelley in honor of Michèle Mouton, an Audi rally driver and the first woman to win at Pikes Peak. Shelley uses differential GPS to track its location to within 2 centimeters, though Gerdes says the margin will be closer to 1 meter on the mountain. Wheel-speed sensors and an accelerometer measure its velocity and a gyroscope controls equilibrium and direction. The algorithms that make it all work run on hardware developed by Sun Microsystems.

“The computational power needed to do this is less than you’d find in your laptop,” Hernandez said

Good choice putting $4,000 rims on your 1990 Honda Civic. That's like Betty White going out and getting her tits done.

Wired article
CN's: The car made five runs during a week of testing, reaching the 14,100-foot summit in 27 minutes.

Very cool to see this happen!

They know that Pike Peak's on it way;
He's loaded lots of toys and goodies in his sleigh.
And every rally nut is going to spy,
To see if Audi's really know how to fly. (off a bigg ass cliff)

I wish I had an Audi that would take me from CT to VA while I sleep.

I spend so many days of my life on the road anymore. Cars need to hurry up and have full autopilot.
