RS6 is back to what it should be - Biturbo V8

The 2013 Audi RS6 Avant, fittingly red with rage in its press photos, is here. It's engine bay holds the 4.0-liter TFSI V8 with two twin-scroll turbochargers and cranks out 560 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque – that latter figure available from just 1,750 rpm. This gets people and their cargo from 0-to-62 miles per hour in 3.9 seconds. Top speed on the standard wagon is 155 mph, while wagons fitted with the Dynamic package are able to get to 174 mph and those with the Dynamic Plus package go all the way to 190 mph.

It's about 220 pounds lighter than the previous generation RS6 Avant and fitted with stop/start and cylinder deactivation, so combined fuel economy is 24 miles per gallon – that's 40 percent better than before. Shifting happens via an eight-speed tiptronic with improved shift times and a long eighth-gear ratio to boost highway mileage.

The adaptive air suspension keeps things comfy, while on the other side the chaperone of performance is Quattro with torque vectoring, dual-mode exhaust with switchable flaps and six-pot calipers on the front rotors. Things can be taken further with the optional sport differential, sport suspension with Dynamic Ride Control, dynamic steering, carbon fiber ceramic brakes, a sport exhaust and 21-inch wheels.

this is seriously one of my dream cars. 516 lb-ft at 1750rpm??!?! do want.

I'm happy that they are back to using the same turbocharged engine in various levels of tune like the old S / RS cars.

I wonder if the S6 could be made to reach the S8 (520) / RS6 (560) levels without much 'work' (4 ring tax guaranteed).

Even more interesting would be how much is left on the table with just a basic tune on the RS.

:plusone: DAMN that looks and sounds good.

With no modifications at all, the S4's 3.0T goes from 319AWHP to 350AWHP with just a tune. Add an intake, pulley, and tune and you're at 395AWHP. I can only imagine what this thing is capable of.

The 4.0T is standard on the A8 so that's a good sign. The previous S6 was an understeering pig between the V10 up front and AWD. I REALLY wanted to like it because it made sense....on paper.

If the past is any indication, the difference between S6 and RS6 is K03 vs K04 or whatever they're using these days if not KKK.

I wanted to like the former S6 as well, but I read in several places that the smart money was on the V8 over the 'Lamborghini V10' for lack of additional goes.

IMO, the S6 has gone from redheaded stepchild to flagship performance sedan. Finally getting the 'S4 treatment' wherein it can hang with and beat the best of BMW and Merc in its class.

Car and Driver (Bimmer fanboys extrordinaires) chose the S6 for handling and performance over the ///M5 and E63 AMG !!! I'm wondering if the mags will say the RS is $Texas better, or just say 'get an S6, its 90% the performance for 60% the price, just like they did for the other german super sedans.

Here's the issue as I see it:

The S6 (420 hp 406 lb/ft 4.0 TT v8) runs 0-60 in 3.7 and 1/4 mile in 12.1 @ 115 mph. (the E63 and M5 are essentially the same but their trap speeds are 8-9 mph higher and $20k+ more) Both the E & M were also superior on slalom and skidpad, but not markedly so.

The RS6 obviously will run the same 0-60 (perhaps a tic quicker) and will certainly improve on the 1/4 time at increased speeds. It's chassis dynamics will also certainly improve to be closer to or just superior to the E & M.

But, will it be worth the $25k+ over the S6? For those with high levels of disposable income sure, why not. For the rest of us?

Here's the ultimate wagon! Audi has released the details and photos of the 2013 Audi RS6 Avant, which packs a twin-turbo 4.0L V8 with 560 hp 516 lb-ft of torque. The twin-turbo V8 accelerates the new Audi RS 6 Avant from 0-62 mph in 3.9 seconds. In the standard configuration, top speed is electronically limited to 155.34 mph. This is increased to 174 mph with the optional Dynamic package and with the Dynamic plus package, the top speed increases to 190 mph.

The V8 is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and the quattro permanent all-wheel drive system. The new RS6 Avant is the first RS model from Audi to come standard with a specifically tuned air suspension. The dynamic setup of the RS 6 adaptive air suspension lowers the body by 20 millimeters. Audi also offers the tauter sport suspension plus with Dynamic Ride Control (DRC) as an alternative to the RS 6 adaptive air suspension. The new Audi RS 6 Avant comes standard with high-gloss, 20-inch, forged wheels in a seven twin-spoke design. Optional 21-inch cast wheels are available in three versions: high-gloss silver, polished black and polished titanium-look.

On the outside the RS6 Avant gets a few upgrades like the matte aluminum applications on the body, the high-gloss black protective grille at the front of the car, the bumpers, the fender, sill flares and the large roof spoiler. At the rear of the car the diffuser and the two large, elliptical exhaust tailpipes let you know that this is one special wagon. Two optional appearance packages - Matte Aluminum or Carbon - further customize the look and include such things as quattro badges on the central front air inlet. With the Carbon appearance package, the front splitter and the diffuser are even more boldly shaped. The new Audi RS 6 Avant is available in nine exterior colors, including the exclusive shade Daytona Gray matte. Additional options from the Audi exclusive range offer numerous opportunities for customization.

Lately Audi's have gotten further away from being engaging cars to actually drive and more "numbers cars" that look great on paper but end up numb, understeering pigs IRL. Hopefully ditching the V10 is a sign that they're serious about competing with AMG and M on the curvy back roads and not just on the internet bench-racer forums. :mrgreen:

I think the B8 S4 was their first step back into the old (right) direction, and the TT-RS and RS3 have been fairly well received (though horribly overpriced).

the problem with an RS6 Avant is that it will cost the same as an E63 Estate. I know which one I'd drive. Saying something is "the Mercedes of its class" isn't technically true anymore. Audi costs more, pound for pound. That's because Merc has been VERY aggressive on content and price to get back some marketshare. The new for 2010 W212 E Class went DOWN in MSRP by $5k, as an example.

Every review of the RS3 I've seen notes the huge amounts of understeer and an overwhelming feeling of driver isolation. I'm just repeating what I've seen/read, I haven't driven it myself so I can't say. If the price weren't so insane I would have given it a try.

I think the B8 S4 was their first step back into the old (right) direction, and the TT-RS and RS3 have been fairly well received (though horribly overpriced).
Agreed about the numbers game, but I do think they are trying to fix that. The B8S4 and TT-RS as Matt said are great examples. Merc really stepped up their game and did a GREAT job in promoting it though. With Audi moving to a lot of common platforms (The B8 S4's 3.0T is going in EVERYTHING), I think that we'll see prices come down.
