Our current generation — Jupiter fabrics — can deliver more than 1 Petabit/sec of total bisection bandwidth. To put this in perspective, such capacity would be enough for 100,000 servers to exchange information at 10Gb/s each, enough to read the entire scanned contents of the Library of Congress in less than 1/10th of a second.

That's some amazing stuff right there! I wonder if they are using something like the Pica8 switches with custom firmware... although they mentioned Finnish writing, so maybe not. http://cumulusnetworks.com/ was mentioned as a spin-off one of the ex-employee's had which looks fairly interesting. There was mention of several others too. I'd love to know more about FireHose.

so you're telling me he's poor?
(srs answer, holy f*ck! those are some damn impressive numbers! it's clear as day how much sense this makes. when i think about the number of individual network devices that our company maintains globally, i know this is what it HAS to become eventually.)

Makes you wonder... is there going to be a time when more devices look like PC's and you buy hardware, and then add whatever software you want on top of that.

I think Cisco is trying to do this with their ASAs (FirePOWER on ASAs, etc), but they're building on such a big legacy platform... would be great if one of the folks that were building these custom devices would spin them off as a COTS product.
