Baltimore begins IndyCar Grand Prix prep ahead of 2011 race
Autoblog wrote:The Indy Racing League is coming to Baltimore, and not just for the crab cakes and football. The Maryland city announced that it will be an official stop on the IRL schedule next year with a 2.4-mile loop that will snake through the heart of downtown and the inner harbor. The announcement means that around $7.8 million in state and federal funds will be used to repave the majority of the streets on the course. One road will also need to be widened in order to meet IRL regulations.

The race is slated for August 2011, and while the city says that the road work will take more than a year to complete, actual preparation for the race will take closer to four weeks. That includes the construction of 50,000 temporary grand-stand seats, though officials claim that the work will be minimally intrusive for both residents and workers in the area.

Baltimore has signed a five-year contract with the IRL, and as a result, officials forecast that it will see around $11 million in tax revenue from the partnership. Likewise, around $250 million is expected to flow into the local economy due to the races.
the original story in the Baltimore Business Journal has a small map of the proposed course.

AWESOME! I was upset they decided not to do DC years ago. My brother (a civil engineer) had actually worked on the plans for the DC course! So who wants to go up to B-more with me? :)

I'm already making plans! We could host a few people here if anyone would like an early start without springing for a hotel.

The DC race was spectacular! I was very saddened to see that it most likely won't happen. That being said, I am definitely in for Balmer, 'hon.

It was roughly 15 or 20 DB above the default noise ceiling for the city... oops

Report: ALMS race to join Indy Car in Baltimore
Autoblog wrote:The inaugural Baltimore IndyCar race set for Labor Day weekend next year has a new friend: the American Le Mans Series. ALMS will host a race the day before the IndyCars race, with trials being run the same day as IndyCar qualifying. Nothing else has been revealed at the moment, with the folks in charge, Baltimore Racing Development, having scheduled a press conference for September 2 to officially announce the double bill.

This will mark the first time in nine years that ALMS visits the D.C. area, and if ALMS communications director Bob Dickinson gets his way, it could be first opportunity for U.S. racing fans to watch the Peugeot 908 diesel-hybrid running the series in anger.

I talked to a guy from Baltimore a week ago, he said that people are still complaining about the race and trying to block it. :notcool:
I really hope the race happens. I know I'll be in Baltimore spending money if it does...

A lot of people won't be.

When it comes to road closings, there are winners, and there are losers.

I live on Capitol Hill, I don't want to hear any wining about road closings for events.

Yea, I'm sure that NW DC and Arlington managed to suffer through road closures for the MCM this weekend and NE DC suffered with post-rally dinner crowd... Metro set a ridership record on Saturday with 850,000 trips (average for a Saturday is 350,000)
