Modification steps

Hey guys, okay so right now my car has a stage 1 clutch, short ram intake, Turbo Back exhaust and running stage 2 through Accessport... I have been looking at threads on here and on nasioc, and i am wondering, seeing as how i am teh noob, what is the best way to start producing larger horsepower numbers out of my 2.0 wrx? Other than a larger turbo and injectors, is there anything else? i had an unorthodox racing pulley kit on my 02 wrx and they seems to really add power to the car but other than that i mean what is there to do? please throw me some ideas... thanks, :help:

fmic and headers, perhaps? but i imagine that with a fmic on your current setup, your turbo lag will be astronomical.

It really depends on your HP goals.

If you want to pick up perhaps another 15-30 or so HP, I'd recommend headers, larger TMIC and a good dyno tune.

If you want power beyond that, you're looking at injectors, fuel pump and a bigger turbo.

If that's the case, look for something around the size and flow of a 16G, VF30/34/39/43.

Any of the above turbos will get you as close to the max HP as possible without sacrificing a broad power band. You can go with a larger turbo, but your power band will shrink significantly.

My first suggestion would be the headers, TMIC and a good tune. You may very well be surprised with the results - it'll really bring the car to life. :pimp:

the car is a lot faster than you are. work on that before adding any more HP, you'll be glad you did.

As Mr Kleen says, driver education. :) It is alot of bang for your buck (I was seeing a 25% improvement in speeds around the course by the end of the day, for $215 can you find a bolt-on part that can give you a 25% improvement in performance?) can be transfered easily between vehicles, and is a whole lot of fun. :)

Yes, i understand, now which intercoolers are out there that will allow me to still run either my greddy 100% recirc, turbo xs 100% recirc, or turbosmart 50/50 on them? I had the ebay ss autochrome one on and the blowoff valves would either be too large and rub on the manifold or hit the hood...

Hey one more questions guys, today a buddy of mine offered me a hyprspeed top mount intercooler in trade for my stock intercooler and $100, anybody ever heard of these intercoolers? Are they any good? Ups or downs of them anybody know of?

I'm familiar with Hyperspeed, they make a lot of stuff for Supras and RX7s (or at least they used to).
The big issue is that I don't know anything about their stuff for the WRX. Did he have it on his WRX? How was the fitment?
In most cases, all the bigger TMICs make similar gains, so it's not much of a risk. I'd just make sure you don't have fitment issues up-front. Look it over and make sure it isn't too banged up. However if he doesn't have everything for it to bolt-on, I would say pass, as having to get a Y-pipe, silicon hoses and clamps will be another $100.

Also, If you haven't installed a cat-less up-pipe you should add that to the list of headers and TMIC.

If your looking for a breakdown, here's what you can expect:
TMIC: +8-10 whp and lbfts
Headers: +10-14 whp / +14-18 lbfts (slight drop in torque below 2,750 RPMs, but big gains above 3,000 RPMs)
Up-pipe: +4-6 whp / +4-6 ftlbs (plus better spool)
Good Tune: Potentially very high

Hmmm... Is this right?

Okay so i was driving home from work today and i realized that when i finally got the new firmware there were a couple new things:

Launch Control: I clicked on it and it said that its not supported by my vehicle, 2004 Impreza WRX... why is that?
Flat-Foot Shift: Dont even know what this is but it said it as well is not supported.... Any info?
Dynamometer: OMG I ran 1st gear from 2000rpm- 6000 rpm and i dyno at 198 awhp and 215 lb. torque?
3rd gear from 2000-6000 rpm 193 awhp and 205 lb. torque
4th gear same rpm 212 awhp and 225 lb. torque...
Is there something up with my car or is that the numbers it should be running with my mods? I have full exhaust, intake, larger tmic, stage 2 93 AP, running 16 psi... Is that correct?

I don't have deets on the AP so you will have to ask others, but you need to have the right map leaded with the settings for each of those features. See this vid for full details.

Launch control lets you set an optimum rev to hold so that you can floor the accelerator and drop the clutch. About the worst thing you can do to your driveline. From the excessively large amounts of fuel dumped into engine/exhaust to the shock loading of the transmission, you can count on your body the number of times you can do this before something expensive needs replacement.

Flat Shifting lets you keep the gas smashed while you shift. Sorta like power shifting in the old days. Again unburnt fuel going through the engine and hell on your synchros.

The road dyno takes into account some general variables, like assumed weight, tire diameter, temperature... and figures what the change in engine RPM is. It then extrapolates that into estimated (high) numbers for e-bragging rights and such. It is a good thing to have to let you show differences between tunes and mods, but not so useful if you want to know exactly what your car is doing in the real world.

And to why you are not supported, you might have to read the user's manual and figure out the defrost/cruise control/throttle/map dance.

If you love your car, you won't try any of this.

Yeah i would not have tried anyways i just wanted to know what the flat foot shifting was and i already knew what launch control... I want to know mainly why my awhp numbers were kinda low for whats on the car... I mean at least i beleive they are low

I have to go against Zak here as my experience with dyno software has it reading very VERY low; Dyno Dynamics or Mustang Dyno low (i.e. about 12% lower than a Dynojet).

However, your numbers are right on target for where a stage 2 WRX should be based on the software dyno numbers I have seen. Your 4th gear numbers are actually quite high (although if the data extrapolation is set for 3rd gear that can effect the numbers).

I can't speak to the launch control and flat shifting, I would NEVER do such things to my WRX or Forester. I love them too much to abuse them like that.
