Name that sound...

Post by goob_os101 »

This sound is present for 30-60sec after start up then it dies off. It has only been this loud for the last few days. It was very faint and for a shorter period during the winter.

I have my guess, but want to see what you guys thought.

I've listened a couple of times and I think perhaps your alternator is letting go.

I was leaning toward PS pump or just the "O" ring before the pump is bad and is letting air in. This is a common issue. I have noticed when i am parked if I turn the wheel softly(left or right) I can feel the wheel shimmy and shake a bit.

Can you tell at least which side of the engine the sound is coming from?

Bad news. The power steering pump is on the left front. The alternator is right up front on top in the middle, so it should be obvious if it was coming from there :( Honestly, that sounds like a bad turbo to me, but that would be coming from the back left :(

It does have that "bad turbo" sound, but that usually is accompanied by some smoke if the seals were gone, and/or the grinding would get much MUCH worse with acceleration if the bearings were shot or the shaft was out of balance or loose.

Did you check your PS fluid level? A little bit of sound and a little bit of shake can come with fluid that is even slightly low.
