Do they think they'll sell enough extra cars to get the needed return on investment?

also: because they (the engineers) can?

I doubt it will happen, but were does the ZR1 have to go? The Z06 is already traction limited.

I suspect there is some media quota that the Corvette development team has to meet and when they can't meet it they send up the "mid-engine" balloon to generate hype.
I remember saying this back in the early 80s' and I feel just as comfortable saying it now . . . "It's Not Going To Happen!"
