if you guessed GM bolts that hold the dashboard in place, you are correct!

As some of you may know, i had to buy a motorcycle because i can no longer drive the gmc jimmy because my jimmy is leaking massively (it's not my fault that gmc named their blazer bastard child, a jimmy).

ok ok, maybe that wasn't really the logic, but after the last meet, i am re-committed to fixing this myself. I highly suspect heater core:

Symptoms:
  • heat spots above top defroster vents that smell of coolant.
  • coolant vaporizing and coming through front vents/change tray that is located right in front of heater core occassionally, usually as the vehicle approaches 210F.
  • leaking from a small rubber tube that comes out of the firewall into the engine bay, below the front right wheel well, but not from the two heater core tubes.
when i get home today, i should probably test the A/C system to see if water exfils from that same rubber tube...

that said, i don't have the requisite tool required to do the job. does someone have a 7.5mm socket, or something that is larger than 1/4" but smaller than 9/32"... i guess 17/64", would fit that bill - advanced auto parts was extremely not helpful in helping me find the right socket/tool and basically told me to go fish. the problem also is that these bolts are right above the dash and therefore there is a windshield in the way.

plz help - kbaithnx.

I'll check the toolbox tonight... I've got a pretty good selection of 1/4" drive sockets. For some reason, the 7.5mm socket rings a bell.

If you can't find the 7.5 (which, odly, sounds familiar to me too), take a peice of electrical tape and put it on the inside of the 7mm. That little bit of added girth (insert joke here) can make all the difference.

Doh! I was off by 2mm... I've got a 5.5mm socket.

Sorry mang, I've only got the same choices you do between 7-8 and 1/4-9/32

:(

I'd say electrical tape and/or rag on the bolt. Or a quick check of autozone or pepboys.

I did a little digging, and it does look like the dash bolts in many GM cars are in fact 7.5mm.

no worries. turns out that the 9/32" worked, i just had to make sure the bolt head ligned up with the socket. in other news... this heater core housing is impossible to get off:
  • "Remove the blower motor resister on the engine side of the firewall"
  • "On blazer/jimmy models, the blower resister is riveted to plastic housing (in the engine compartment). a marked portion of the plastic must be cut out with a sharp utility knife"
  • "Using a flashlight and small ratchet and extension, reach through the blower resister hole to remove the one engine side bolt securing the hvac"
ok, i actually was able to complete that however it now appears there are still more bolts holding the housing in place on the engine side under the left wheel well. FTS.

Plan B: Cut a really big hole through the plastic to get through heater core.

Late to the game, but I looked too. I had a 4.5, 5.5, and 6.5 :/
