strange noise at highway speeds

Post by Mr Kleen »

lately I've noticed a strange noise coming from the WRX. it's a high pitched whine (droning, not squealing) that only happens when I'm on throttle at highway speeds between 60 and 70 and can only be heard if the windows are down.

any guesses?

Better to hear in person to make a more valid guess/recommendation.

I know the mounts for the mirrors can pick up some noise after a few years...

I've only heard that between 100-105mph... they disappear after that :)

the mirror whistle is higher pitched and speed dependent, not throttle dependent. every so often I get the mirror whistle but this is different. :?

I'm a little concerned that it's the wheel bearings. but then again it could be extra noise coming from the rear diff skid plate I just installed.

Wheel bearings are very distinct and LOUD. We just had both of Suzie's rear bearings replaced in her Legacy. I can definitely tell you if it's that.

When you go faster, does the pitch increase?

When mine went bad, it started very quietly, accompanied by a slight burning smell. Got much worse after that over time.
