Storage

Post by avriette »

Well, it's official. I am moving to Taipei, Taiwan. I'm presently in San Diego doing briefings before leaving probably the week of either 1 July or 23 June.

The cars are being stored, among other things. For a lot of reasons we can't bring them in country (which are roughly the same reasons you can't just bring an R34 GTR into the US).

My contract is through the end of 2009. I may not be there that long, but I am damn near sure I will be there at least six months.

The cars (82 280ZX, 06 STI) need to be stored. I just got off the phone with the place that we were going to use to store the cars and they said that first off they will not store cars on jackstands, that they must have the keys to the ignition, and that they "take them out and drive them every once in a while" (ostensibly to keep them running). Since I don't know these people, I'm not a big fan of that.

I had a big concern for the Subaru, in that I didn't want to leave the tank full of gasoline, because gas goes bad. Turns out, the Subaru (this according to Don Beyer) has a plastic gas tank and it's not going to rust anyways. So I can store it empty or mostly empty.

But it's the sitting that's going to kill the struts/springs/tires.

I am less concerned with the Z because it is already needing chassis work and new suspension (the Tokicos sat for six years and are just shot). I'd be happy just to keep it somewhere covered.

With the Subaru I need to keep it somewhere on jack stands, out of the weather, and hopefully with room to store four of my wheels (with the Falken Azenis on them, if somebody wants to make me a deal on these, I may consider it - they have less than 1000 miles on them).

Does anyone have any suggestions? I figure there are guys that have a lot of cars that have to keep them stored somewhere. Guys that have corvettes, not just some military guy who deployed and needs to park his Jeep. Somewhere, there's a storage facility that understands sports cars and has room for two more. Anyone know where it is?

Also, if you think you might be interested in parking my car in your garage, there's $100/mo per car in it. The Z could be parked outside, but would need to be kept dry and covered. I can order a cover from Motorsport Auto that fits the 280ZX poifectly.

anyways, long post, but this really hurts. we don't want to sell the car (although we're not upside down), and we're really going to miss it over there. I'm real bummed I can't work on the Z this summer. Help a brother out. Please.

Those are the wheels on the car. Stock, 06, silver. No road/curb rash.

No. The 280 is in "rolling" state. It has four tires which much be replaced. It has brembo rotors that are in good shap, and porterfield R4S (kind of extreme for the street) in unknown condition. The engine needs minor electrical work, and it needs 22 gallons of 5 year old gas drained from it. After that, it runs. And, really, if you want to drive it (or anyone), I'd rather see the car driven than not. Esp since it needs new tires, somebody's going to pay for that.

Afterwards its a terror. It makes 300hp and it weighs less than 2400lbs. It might be fun for SCCA, and I really wouldn't mind that. My end goal is an RB26 in the car with a getrag 6spd rather than the T56. So, people driving that car and abusing the hell out of it actually make me happy, rather than the opposite (the tokico's have a lifetime warranty and can be shipped back with new ones returned to you. I also have what were at the time called "eibach race springs" on the Z, I think they're now called "prodrive". After sitting that long, they're probably hosed).

If somebody wanted to consider this an opportunity to drive a 1982 280ZX Turbo into the ground (while preventing rust and not wrapping it around a tree), that's 100% okay by me.

But I still gotta figure out what to do with this STI.

I might be able to help with the Z or the STI... need to think about it a little more!

Good choice putting $4,000 rims on your 1990 Honda Civic. That's like Betty White going out and getting her tits done.
