Toluene Mixing Quick Guide

Post by Tarmac02 »

Toluene Mixing for higher octane has been done for years. What it boils down to is it is much cheaper than buying a tank full of 100 octane and safer than running race gas when you have catalytic converters. For firsthand experience w/toluene talk to JohnW whenever you see him on. Here's a FAQ I found when searching around the web.

formula is

(A x O) + (B x 114) / (A + B) = C

A= # of gallons of pump gas

O= octane rating of pump gas

B= # of gallons of toluene

C= octane rating of yor mix

toluene has r+m/2 level of 114, much higher than any off the shelf octane boosters

So as an Ex. for all of the Subie Guys in California w/ your 15.5 gallon tank

(14 x 91) + (1.5 x 114) / 15.5 = C
(1274) + (171) / 15.5 = C
1445 /15.5 = C

C= 93.2

Of course this is way more useful for us CA guys with 91 octane. But I have a friend who does this to run his 100 octane for track days.
