Oil?

Post by ElZorro »

Ok, digging through the forums I'm not finding alot on oil (Bob's post on oil is killer background http://forums.dcawd.com/viewtopic.php?f ... &hilit=oil, but looking for more specific)

What are folks doing for oil in their Subbies? Particularly 2.5L turbos... I had kept the FXT on natural, but thinking now is a good time to maybe change that decision.

^^^ Pretty interesting stuff! I'm going to have to read more about it!

I mostly use Mobil 1, but I have been known to switch to a different synthetic if it's on a really good sale, haha.

Summer time I run 15w-50, winter time I run 10w-30.

Good choice putting $4,000 rims on your 1990 Honda Civic. That's like Betty White going out and getting her tits done.

In the WRX I run Mobil 1 Synthetic.
In the FXT I run whatever Synthetic or Synthetic blend I find on sale or the service place has.
I don't beat on my cars that much so I just don't see the point of paying the extra coin for what is likley nothing more than promotional material.

If I know I'm going to the track or an autocrss perhaps I'll throw in some pricey stuff the day before and change it not too long after. But for day to day driving, meh.

That said, I have read numerous tech articles that would recommend that the first 3K a built engine should be run on a nice thin dyno oil (think Castrol GTX 5-30).

I figured I would also pass along my recomendations for the upgrade path ahead:

1. Stromung shorty Downpipe: $229 (boxer4racing.com)
2. Turbo XS axle-back $368 (oakos.com)
3. STi uppipe $50-$150 (look out for used)
4. used vf series turbo or 16G $300-400 (new 16G will run $695)
5. TMIC (only if option 4 is chosen) used STi $250-350 make sure hoses are included. SSautochrome $185.

and yes, this was my upgrade path.

Now, lets talk brakes, wheels and tires. . .

We are running Pennzoil Platinum in Anna's car right now. I had used it in mine for 25,xxx miles and was very happy with it. When I did the last oil change, I sent both out for analysis. Everything looked really good, except it had sheared to a 20 weight for both cars. I'm trying Rotella in mine, and we'll see what the report says. If it looks good, I'll try it in Anna's car.
