DCAWD - Karting @ Summit Point - 7/9

Post by Sabre »

Saturday, July 9th we are getting a group together to go karting at Summit Point!

Sessions are 11 minutes long on RX7 karts (powered by Honda GX 390cc engines). It's not unusual to hit 40+ mph on the back straights with these, so it is a ton of fun.

If we can get together 15 or more people, we will be able to get group pricing. Quite a few of us will be running all day with the "Kart To you Puke" (KTP) package which is $120 for unlimited karting all day (you must have a SPK membership to do this, that is and additional $15 for this group only. Normally $40). You can also pay for single races at $25 per session and run as many session as you like.

Last year we went up early and set up a camp between Summit Main and the karting track. This worked out very well since we were all exhausted after driving karts all day long. This also gives you a chance to talk to everyone you were racing with. Feel free to join us in this, but let us know you are interested in this so we can plan a space accordingly.

Summit Point is approximately a 90 minute drive from DC.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tAUwHuTuvVk[/video]

Karting details can be found at the official site: http://www.summitpointkart.com

The Track:
Image
0.52 Miles
30' wide
11 Turns
350, 400 and 650 Foot Straights

Plans:
Arrive around 12ish Saturday morning.
Kart for a couple of hours
Light lunch (Bring or sometimes we do a caravan somewhere close)
Return to karting until your arms fall off

Where to go:
Ask for directions to the Washington Circuit / Karting track. At the bottom you will see a map of where to go once inside Summit Point Raceway.

What you need to bring:
Money, plastic or paper works
Helmet (loaners are available, use at your own risk. Any DOT approved helmet is fine. You must have eye protection.)
Sunscreen (It could be sunny all day)
Water
Closed toe shoes (Sandals/flipflops need not apply)
Bug spray (we are in the woods after all)
Gloves

If you are camping:
A place to sleep (Car or tent will do)
Food and Drinks (Generally things are shared: If you want to try something, bring something to share)
Toilet paper (ya never know)

When entering Summit, make sure to tell them that you are there for Karting, otherwise they might charge you. They will make you sign a waiver saying if you get died (hehe), your family cannot kill/sue them. It is WV after all...

^^^ I presume KTP if you are thinking about camping?

I've gone to Speed Unlimited before over in Temple Hills MD. It's a pretty decent shop and you can try the helmet on before purchasing (unlike if you do it online). Their prices seem to be fairly reasonable too.

Coleman Power Sports in Falls Church and Woodbridge has a great selection, maybe their 10% off sale is still on (was yesterday). Ask for Melissa, she's good at listening and getting you fitted right. Loudoun Motorsports in Leesburg is good too.

Just make sure you find an experienced sales person, some aren't great (read not trained) at helmet fitting.

Note, SPK's policy is "it is a fullface helmet with a visor." NASA Autox 2011 rules require a SNELL 95 or newer, so you may want to make sure the helmet you get meets that rating as well (which may be hard to find at the motorcycle shops I list above)

The site recommends online registration - should I do that or just do it in person?

Also, my friend has a full face motorcycle helmet - will he be permitted to use that instead of a loaner?

Looking forward to this!

*edit doh! Just saw what Jason posted. I'll see if it's at least snell 95 rated. Though does SPK require snell 95, or is that rec only for those who also want to do autocross?

*edit again - so I called and asked and was told that helmets had to be a certain spec, but the lady didn't know what spec specifically :/ She said I had to ask the kart guys when I get there. So i'm going to assume it's at least snell 95.

i seem to recall that the helmets used for karting were motorcycle helmets with an M rating... so anything with a M 95+ rating is probably fine. The helmets there were OK. I brought my car helmet last time and they didn't really check. Only difference is car helmets have some fire retardant material.
