225/50/16's ?

Post by goob_os101 »

I am going to need to tires for the new stage II powa. Does anyone have experience running 225/50's on 16 x 6.5" stockers?

Did some research on NASIOC and consensus is that it works but may be bulgy.

I looked into getting some 17 x 7.5" but would rather keep my 14lbs stockers and the cash.

225/50R-16:
Hard to beat the Kumho Ecsta SPT for $79
or maybe the Falken FK 452 for $90
If your looking for an autocross type tire, perhaps Falken Azenis RT-615 for $116
or the Kumho Ecsta XS for $114
If your looking for all seasons go Kumho Ecsta ASX for $74
or Falken Ziex ZE-512 for $71 or Falken Ziex ZE-912 for $85

Or go crazy and get some 215/45R-16: (save nearly 1.5" in radius and lower your final drive ratio).
Kumho Ecsta XS $96

I was looking at the Goodyear Eagle GT's Ultra High Performance All-Season tire $95 - $20 rebate in 225/50/16 They are known to have a stiff side wall which I am looking for since the 225/50's are meaty.

I was looking into this, but my only concern is with such a low profile and coilovers it may be too harsh for DD although lowering the final drive ratio has its benefits.... :nana: also not as wide so better MPG!

If the $20 rebate is per tire and not just on a set than the $75 for the Goodyears is a good deal.
Otherwise, do a local search on tirevan for the Ecsta ASX, Falken Ziex ZE-512 or ZE-912 and see if you can save on shipping.

here is a guyfrom the 92x forum:

[quote=DrSaaburu]Here are the pics. I got them for about half price from tirerack, so I figured they were worth a try. They do look a little bulgy... I'm not sure I'd do it again. The real test is the performance... which I can't really say anything about yet. The week after I got the tires the engine died, so I haven't had a chance to push them at all. But they feel fine around town.

Way to go! RE-01Rs are fantastic tires! And for half price they can't be beat!
Trust me they will make a huge difference.
However, you will need a set of snow tires come cold weather.

What to do...

Kumho Ecsta ASX 205/55/16 = $72/ea
or
Kumho Ecsta ASX 225/50/16 = $72/ea
or
Potenza RE960AS Pole Position 205/55/16 = $104/ea

Not a typo the ASX's are the same price, but I am concerned with the 225 on a 6.5" wheel.

please help!

225s work fine on a 6.5" wide rim...and the 205/55 will have a taller sidewall (more flex) then the 225/50...plus, the 225 will have a wider contact patch which is better suited for AutoX.

As for tire compound grip...not sure which is the better, the Kumho or the Potenza...don't know which is stickier.

As for treadwear (not sure your stance on this)...not sure which is better, the Kumho or the Potenza.

Good luck!

Yes, you would likely get better all around (read wet) performance from a set of 225/50R16 Potenza RE960AS but at nearly $40 more a pop (Price: $110.00) is the $160 difference worth it?

For example, The ASX received an over all score of 6.80 to the Pirelli PZero Nero M+S 6.96 in a Tire Rack Test.
The same PZero Nero M+S received an over all score of 7.34 to the Potenza RE960AS 7.45.
So, if you extrapolate the data, the ASX's would likely have rated around 7.20 to the RE960AS rated at 7.45 with most of the differences being in wet performance where the RE960AS really shine. In the dry they will likely perform very similarly.
