Holy smokes. Day 1 was intense. Out of 17 cars that started, 8 finished. We are among the 8. Looking forward to day 2!

Here's a shot of our evo!:

So out of 19 entries, only 9 cars made it to the finish line. Roads were pretty rough. I saw two cars go out on the first stage! A couple cars went head first into trees/signs, and William Doyle did a triple roll on one of the stages - luckily, everyone was alright. My own rally almost ended on this stage when i overcooked a turn, but we manage to claw our way out the ditch :P

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jcz4wEZy ... ideo_title[/video]

Throughout the entire rally i was not allowed to know how we were doing. There were 7 open class AWD entries, so imagine our surprise when i found out we had finished not only 1st in Production AWD class, but 2nd overall!

Our plan for the build was just to get to SS1. And our game plan for this rally was just to finish. So coming back with an overall podium finish, and 5 trophies from the event, I'm really just at a loss for words.

Thanks to the entire DCAWD community. And thanks to Sabre for taking me to that rallyX earlier this summer and getting rally back into my head.

So there you have it, International Rally New York 2011. I'll get more pics/vids up as soon as i can.
  • IRNY Regional 1 - 1st Production Cup AWD

Dude! A tenth of a second differential over an hour and forty minutes? That is madness, pure madness I say.
I want to sprinkle glitter all over this post 'cause I'm fresh out of unicorns.
Keep pulling stunts like that and you can blame Julian all you want.

Happy for you, man.

Stay safe.

Looks like SO much fun!

BTW, what kind of numbers are you putting down with that restricter in place?

Can't wait for in-car video! :drive:

Side note: why do people insist on taking vertical videos with their phone? TURN THE DAMN THING SIDEWAYS, YOUR VIDEO WILL LOOK 1000x BETTER!

hard to tell since this is the first time i have driven a IX and the power band is much flatter (mivec?) - did we also mention this car finally managed to get tuned 2 days before the rally :P...as it was on its way over to us from chicago? i would have wanted to know, but dyno'ing it was low on the priority list.

Compared to the VIII, the 34mm restrictor kills power as you go north of 5000-5500rpms, which doesn't leave much for power band considering we don't hit full spool until ~3000rpms. My guess is we're probably getting 210-220ish (basically stock) at the wheels, as it is way underpowered compared to the tuned street evo VIII I had at the DE rallyX. my estimates may be skewed by the barely legal db exhaust we have and lack of interior sound proofing :P

i do have this even more subjective statement to make - i never felt as if i needed more power in the straights. On gravel, i always had enough to rotate the car through the turns.

dirtyimpreza has a good thread on sizing a turbo for an open class car w/ 34mm restrictor, puts most open class cars ~260whp/350wtq, so our super stock "production awd" car should be way under that. Maybe one of you subaru guys can translate, the turbo favorite seems to be vf36 or gt2871r - sounds to me like that is smaller than stock. and i'm assuming a size down from our TD05-16G's: http://www.dirtyimpreza.com/forums/show ... hp?t=10876. Also in open class, you can run ALS which would make a world of difference.

Makes sense. I was kind of expecting around that. The flat power band is probably dude to the tuning of MIVEC and timing. It's shocking the difference it can make in spool and power on the Subaru EJ's. The stock WRX has a TD04-13T and the stock STI has a Vf39/VF43 (depends on year). The VF36 is a twin scroll, ball bearing turbo with a titanium wheel, so it will spool pretty damn quick. It isn't much larger, if at all, from the stock STI turbo. I'm guessing people could make full boost by 3500RPM or so. With race gas, they'd be around 300WHP and 350-400WTQ. The GT28 looks like a single scroll, but I'd put it at about the same spool with slightly less power.

Can you all mod your stock ECU to run ALS? Or can you run aftermarket ECU's?

For NASA Stock Heavy, the rules say ecu is free provided the original wiring harness is intact; no additional sensors, "even for the purposes of logging" are allowed. True ALS requires modification of the throttle body, which would of course be prohibited in stock heavy. Launch Control and NLTS on the stock ecu though, that could work.

It took a while to get all the clips together, but here it is. Black Box rally team's International Rally New York 2011 highlights:

Btw, New York Rally Championship results were announced yesterday - apparently we scored enough points at IRNY to take 2nd in the Production AWD Cup, 5th overall in the NYR championship! :D Looking forward to 2012!
