First event, need some pointers

Post by gsx-lex »

Gentlemen, My first AutoX event is almost here. Although, i've done the driving events, I've never driven my own car at an autox. Any tips and suggestions you might want to give to a first timer? I've been watchin videos, and I cant for the life of me understand how more people don't get lost on the course! Maybe, it'll make sense in person.

Thanks

remembering the course is the hardest part imo. then comes looking 2 cones ahead. then comes setting up for turns. then comes throttle work and braking etc. but i suck.

Show up early and WALK THE COURSE.

I'm sure Katya4me and moxnix would have the bestest advice to give, seeing as how they pretty much eat/sleep/breathe/dookie the stuff. ;)

OK, sounds good. I've got a friend who will be attending that as well, his name is Mike and he drives a big old Ford wagon aka The Family Truckster. I find CDC courses to be a wee bit confusing on that lot, only because they tend to double back on themselves, so make sure you get some good walks in and look at the map. The Moran brothers are good autoxers, feel free to ask them to ride along. Also I know there are some vids on Youtube of autoxes at that lot, and they will help you get a feel for what kinds of courses they lay out there.

We've got a DC event that day, so that takes a bit of priority for us, but you should have a lot of fun. I'm pretty sure that you'll get a decent amount of runs and there's nothing like seat time to teach you how your car behaves and how to become a better driver.

i thought i'd get lost on the course too before my first autox recently. walk the course a couple times, paying close attention to the pointer (?) cones... the ones that lie flat next to another cone telling you where to turn. after walking the course once or twice, let it sink in and take the first lap at a brisk but relaxed pace so you become familiar with the turns. after that, let your muscle memory take over and drive like a bat out of hell (and prepare for much smilage).

edit: and like gabe said, LOOK AHEAD. look at least 1 turn ahead of the one you're about to take. you can do something about that one.

Above all else, remember... don't hit the cone runners. It's not a rule but some of them might take it personally.

This was an awesome event. Most of the people there were able to check their egos at the door (big plus). I was able to get 5 runs in before Lunch!

Here is some pics and a video. More Pics can be found on my site (duh) . http://www.ziptiebandit.com .
(Yes I have footage of the wagon, and will post it up later.)

Looks like you put an inside rear tire up on that second photo!!!!!! w00t!!!

Hmm, jury is still out on the Noble for me. I LOVE the looks and the engineering.... but EVERY time I see one, it's not running right according to the person driving it.

Good choice putting $4,000 rims on your 1990 Honda Civic. That's like Betty White going out and getting her tits done.

I'm a fan of the Noble. I like the old body style (like the one in the pic) much better than the new one. 'course I can't afford either one.
