DCAWD Meet - Monday 04/18/16 - Dogwood Tavern

Post by Sabre »

Hello all,
The next meeting of DC All Wheel Drive will be on Monday, 04/18/16 at 7:15. This is a regular meet, so we will be meeting for a little while, then going inside to eat. While we are there, please stay out of the right of ways. No standing in the road and such, just stay in between or in front of the cars. If hoods open, only leave them open long enough to do you business. Past that, anyone with a love of cars is more than welcome to attend!

Dogwood is located at:
132 W. Broad Street
Falls Church, VA 22046
(703)237-8333

Link of map: here

Most up to date information found on our web site at www.dcawd.com

Let me know if you are coming so that we can try to keep an accurate count. PLEASE keep things reasonable coming into the parking lot.

Note: This is an AWD, we meet no matter what Mother Nature throws at us! We are not restricted in anyway to AWD, we welcome anyone with a love of cars!

Take care all and I hope to see you there!

Nothing particularly interesting, Chris' sister is moving back to the US from Belgium and she needs a car. Looks like it will be a 2013 Honda Fit 5spd.

The Fit is a great choice. It's my favorite in that class.
I'm not a big fan of the current iteration, but the 2013 is fine vehicle.

The packaging of the Fit is pretty amazing, it's the only car that isn't a SUV that I don't have to slouch to fit in the back. The back seats fold completely flat to the floor, which is a pretty magic too. It's supposed to have the same torque and more power than my Mazda, but here it falls short. Where my car feels eager and torquey, the fit just feels a bit sluggish. I feel like I'm abusing the clutch to make it move at all from a stand still. So either Mazda is lying or Honda is. But it's still enough power, especially given how Chris' sister drives (very cautious).

It might just be weight:
Mazda 2: 2,306 lbs. (curb weight)
Honda Fit: 2,496 lbs. (curb weight)
That's almost 200 lbs.

Or it also might be the power curve:
Fit:
106 ft-lbs. @ 4800 rpm / 117 hp @ 6600 rpm
Mazda 2:
98 ft-lbs. @ 4000 rpm / 100 hp @ 6000 rpm
That 800/600 rpm difference could certainly make the Fit seem sluggish.

The power curve and the weight are definitely contributing. Your Mazda is going to feel a lot more sprightly on it's feet.

Easy calc:

Code: Select all

           Mazda Fit
Weight 2306 2496
trq 98 106
hp 100 117
lb/trq 23.53 23.55
lbs/hp 23.06 21.33
Dyno trq 93.19 79.43
Dyno HP 94.95 89.66
Dyno L/T 24.75 31.42
Dyno L/H 24.29 27.84
Disclaimer: I couldn't find runs on the same dyno for each car, but I compared Dynojet to Dynojet. I can't bold it, but Mazda is underrating their numbers. You can see that the weight per trq and per hp and both much better for the Mazda and the area under those curves is greater, so the Mazda wins hands down. This link confirms it too. 0-60 H:11s, M:8.5s. That's a huge difference. Stopping, skid, everything is better on the Mazda.... so why not get her the Mazda? space?
