Yeah, I saw that.
However, it is only the short block, and even if he's practically willing to GIVE it away I'd still have to buy some very expensive parts (JE forged pistons $600, forged STI rods $350, and ported heads $500) just to get it up to Phil's 2.0 built long block for $2k. The costs of parts and build-up of the longblock would quickly negate any up-front savings.
What's holding me back is not the cost of the block . . . it's the additional $1,600-$2,000 cost for install and misc. costs (gaskets, ect.)

There is a lot of work to an engine swap. Most places estimate between $1,600 and $2,000 not including gaskets and any other parts needed (AC, belts, manifolds, ect.). I don't own an engine lift so a professional shop is a must. Also, to get the most out of this engine I would need to have the ECU flashed to remove the 7,000 RPM redline as it has been balanced to spin at over 8,000 RPMs. I would also want to put in some bigger injectors than my STi pinks (modded stockers most likely) as well as a bigger turbo (TD0620G or have my vf22 turned into a pe1820). Than the UTEC would have to be reprogramed to scale the injectors properly and retune from the ground up. While I could do some of the work myself, I would want someone with experience to help me "not" make any serious errors.

I'm sure a swap could be done over a long weekend by "us" (If i dont sell that 4.6L its going in my jeep this year) I mean swaping an engine should not be that hard, just drain all fluids, unbolt/unplug everything lift out and inset the new one. If its already assembeled and ready to put in that is. All the belts and what not should transfer right over (I'm assuming its the EXACT same engine). As for the turbo and stuff, yea, that gets expensive really quick.
either way, you would have one hella fast wagon

According to Phil the engine is "a direct swap in your WRX as it started life as a US EJ20. You just need to add your accessories such as AC, power steering, alternator, exhaust manifold, uppipe, and everything north of and including the intake manifold. The motor already has cam gears, timing belt, tensioner, is timed and ready to go. Because of this a total novice could finish the job as it’s just bolting on parts."
I still don't own an engine lift, nor do I have a nice warm dry area in which to do the work. And while I certainly have tools, though they pale in comparison to wealth of tools that Colin has. My only experience pulling an engine was over 20 years ago, and that was on a 67' Triumph Spitfire.

Sounds like its a long block, so really its not too bad install wise. You can rent lifts from uhaul as i remember, if not I'm sure someone has one around. I may have a garage with a ton of space if you need a place. I have a garage now, but its a tight fit.drwrx wrote:According to Phil the engine is "a direct swap in your WRX as it started life as a US EJ20. You just need to add your accessories"

Either way, its a big job. Good luck with it.

Actually, someone "else" would have to hold on to the engine until I get the money to do the install. Then I have to be able to store my old engine in hopes I can sell it. There are a bunch of little issues like this that are holding me back.

Darrin,
Other than being built to take a pounding (not like that you pervs) what other advantages does this engine have for you? Spool isn't going to be any better, or marginally so, correct? No increase in displacement, no AVCS.
I guess I'm asking what kind of daily driver gains are you hoping to get out of this?
And IIRC, don't you have STi pink injectors? Or did you get modded stockers? I only ask because teh pinks won't be enough to handle 400awhp.
Hmmm, me needs to ponder this a lil' while.

There are some improvements of this engine over stock:
1. according to Phil can easily run 8,500 RPMs. His last like this ran 9,000 RPMs regularly (he spun the shaft bearing at 9,500 but did no damage to the engine itself)
2. ported intake and exhaust valve ports for better flow.
And yes, I only have pinks, I would have to get some modded stockers to support 350-400 whp.
However, with the exception of injectors (and either a TD0620G or turn the vf22 into a pe1820) I wouldn't need any thing else. I would also have to start saving up for a new trany.
Trust me, I'm far from being totally sold on this deal. There are lots of issues I haven't worked out.

^^^ Still, for that price, have the damn thing shipped!
In all honesty though, I would want a leakdown test on any engine that I was considering buying online.
